Scaling the housing supply in Ciudad Guzmán

An impact initiative with the Municipality of Ciudad Guzmán

The problem

Demand outpaces supply

More than 11,000 people in the city of Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico lack adequate housing. The city is experiencing the effects of accelerated industrial development, with the demand for housing outpacing the supply, making what is available unaffordable for low-income families.

  • The agricultural industry flooded the local housing market over the past two decades.
  • Agriculture companies rent and buy most of the available housing.
  • There isn’t enough housing to accommodate all the agriculture workers and their families. In the last 5 years there have only been 244 low-income units for sale.

The opportunity

We see an opportunity to develop housing products and services that meet the needs of families at a price they can afford.

The solution

From experienced housing developers to trusted credit unions, the local market has all elements in place to foster the supply of housing solutions.

By facilitating partnerships among local market players, it’s feasible to design and develop housing products and services that address the diverse housing situations experienced by local families: the need of well-served land, new homes for sale and rent, and loans for housing improvements and expansions, to name a few.
